Meen thokku, a Tamil-style fish dish, is sure to impress any seafood lover! Personally, I love all fish recipes because they’re not just packed with nutrition, but they also cook super fast. This one is no exception. It’s one of the easiest and quickest recipes you can make with just a few basic ingredients for a tasty meal.

What is Meen Thokku
Meen thokku is a traditional South Indian dish that’s both spicy and full of flavor. There are different ways to customize this dish, but in this recipe, it’s a semi-dry fish curry made by simmering fish pieces in a thick gravy of onions, tomatoes, ground chili paste, and aromatic spices like turmeric and fennel, all garnished with coriander leaves. It’s a delicious and comforting meal perfect for pairing with rice, chapati, roti, dosa, idli, or even flaky parathas. The simplicity and quick preparation of this recipe make it an ideal choice for a busy weekday lunch.
Customization Tips
Regarding customization for the Meen Thokku, you can substitute 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste for fresh ginger and garlic. I used Byadgi dried red chilies, but for a more vibrant color, Kashmiri dried red chilies are an option. However, keep in mind that Kashmiri chilies are less spicy than Byadgi. For this recipe, I opted for dried red chili paste, which enhances flavor and provides a thicker gravy base compared to chili powder. Instead of whole fennel seeds, you can choose coarsely ground fennel seeds for a more aromatic and intense flavor. These can be stored in an airtight container for up to a month and used in various dishes.
Serving Suggestions for Meen Thokku
When I make this meen thokku, I usually serve it with some plain rice and a veggie dish like Spinach Soup. If I’m in the mood for more variety, I’ll add a fried fish like Vanjaram Fry or Masala Fish Fry, along with a crispy pappadum and some pickle on the side. Isn’t it delightful to enjoy a meal like this?
You can try this Meen Thokku with my serving suggestions, or if you prefer simplicity, just enjoy it as a side with your loaf of bread. No matter how you serve it, this recipe is definitely going to be in your saved list!
